A classic ink wash painting by Yi Jeong, depicting bamboo swaying in the wind. This piece captures the resilience and grace of the subject through fluid brushwork.
Yi Jeong, known by his art name Taneun, was a member of the Joseon royal family and a master of ink wash painting. His work focuses on the bamboo, a subject that carries specific cultural associations within the literati tradition of East Asia. The bamboo represents resilience, flexibility, and moral integrity, as it bends under the force of the wind without breaking.
This composition demonstrates the artist's command of ink tonality. The darker, saturated ink defines the foreground leaves, while lighter, diluted washes suggest stalks receding into the background. This technique creates a sense of depth and movement, capturing the plant as it reacts to a gust of wind. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the disciplined training required of a scholar-painter during the period.
The scroll includes calligraphy at the top, which integrates the visual image with poetic text. This combination of painting and poetry is a hallmark of the literati style, where the artist aims to express a personal state of mind rather than a literal representation of nature. The muted palette of ink on silk provides a sense of quietude, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythm of the brush strokes and the balance of the composition.
Yi Jeong survived the Japanese invasions of Korea during the late sixteenth century, an experience that is often linked to the themes of endurance found in his work. His paintings of bamboo are highly regarded for their technical skill and their adherence to the aesthetic values of the Joseon elite. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the texture of the silk and the fluid quality of the artist's hand.
