A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, featuring a stylised tiger entwined with a bamboo stalk in a traditional pillar format.
Nishimura Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating in Edo during the first half of the eighteenth century. This woodblock print depicts a tiger, a creature rarely seen in Japan at the time, rendered through the imaginative lens of traditional East Asian iconography. The tiger is shown in a dynamic, slightly contorted posture, wrapping its body around a central stalk of bamboo.
The composition is vertical, typical of the pillar print format. Shigenaga employs a stylised approach to the animal, focusing on the rhythmic patterns of the fur and the bold, dark stripes that define its form. The tiger's expression is humanised, with wide eyes and a visible tongue, a common stylistic choice in period depictions of exotic beasts. The bamboo stalk provides a rigid, vertical counterpoint to the organic curves of the feline, creating a balance between the two subjects.
Technically, this work reflects the early methods of Japanese printmaking, where colour was often applied by hand or through limited block printing before the full development of nishiki-e (brocade prints). The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones, ochre, and black ink to create contrast against the aged paper ground. Shigenaga was known for his experimentation with perspective and his influence on younger artists, including his pupil Suzuki Harunobu. This print captures the period's fascination with natural subjects filtered through a decorative, graphic sensibility. The lines are deliberate and clear, prioritising the silhouette and the graphic impact of the tiger's markings over anatomical realism. It remains a representative example of the mid-Edo period aesthetic, where the natural world was frequently interpreted through established artistic conventions.
