A detailed etching by Herman van Swanevelt depicting the biblical encounter between Balaam and the angel within a classical, atmospheric setting.
This etching by Herman van Swanevelt depicts the biblical narrative of Balaam and the Angel, a subject drawn from the Book of Numbers. Swanevelt, a Dutch painter and etcher who spent a significant portion of his career in Rome, was a member of the group of Northern artists known as the Bamboccianti. His work often synthesises the classical traditions of Italian scenery with the atmospheric sensibilities of the Dutch school.
The composition is structured around a classic repoussoir technique, where large, dark trees on the left frame the scene and draw the eye toward the distant, hazy mountains. The figures of Balaam and the angel are positioned in the mid-ground, integrated into the natural surroundings rather than dominating the frame. Swanevelt employs fine, hatched lines to create texture in the foliage and the rocky terrain, demonstrating his technical proficiency with the etching needle. The light is managed through varying densities of cross-hatching, which provides a sense of depth and volume to the terrain.
Swanevelt was known for his ability to capture the specific quality of light found in the Roman Campagna. This print reflects his interest in the relationship between human figures and the vastness of the natural world. The inclusion of the inscription 'H Swanevelt Fecit Rom' indicates that the work was produced during his time in Italy, where he gained a reputation for his skill in depicting rural subjects. The print is a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the artist balances narrative clarity with a focus on atmospheric effects and topographical detail. It remains a representative piece of the period's fascination with the intersection of classical mythology, biblical history, and the observation of nature.
