A precise 1889 marine study of Havana Bay by the Mexican master José María Velasco, capturing the atmospheric light and topography of the harbour.
José María Velasco is widely recognised for his meticulous approach to the natural world, particularly his studies of the Mexican geography. While he is most associated with the Valley of Mexico, his travels occasionally took him to coastal regions, resulting in works such as this depiction of Havana Bay. Completed in 1889, the piece demonstrates his disciplined training at the Academia de San Carlos.
The composition reflects the artist's scientific interest in topography and atmospheric conditions. Velasco employs a precise technique, balancing the expansive water with the architectural details of the harbour. The light across the surface of the bay is rendered with careful attention to the specific quality of Caribbean air, a hallmark of his observational method. Unlike his larger, more panoramic canvases, this work offers a focused view of the maritime environment, capturing the interplay between the built structures of the port and the natural expanse of the sea.
His process often involved sketching directly from nature before refining the final composition in the studio. This particular work, executed in oil on paper and subsequently mounted on canvas, retains a sense of immediacy often found in his preparatory studies. The palette remains grounded in the natural tones of the sea and sky, avoiding unnecessary embellishment. By prioritising clarity and structural integrity, Velasco provides a clear record of the site as it appeared in the late nineteenth century. The work remains a representative example of his ability to translate complex environmental observations into a coherent visual form, maintaining a balance between technical rigour and the aesthetic requirements of the period.
