A refined etching by James McNeill Whistler, capturing the artist Alexandre Axenfeld with fluid, expressive lines and a focus on tonal balance.
This etching depicts the French artist Alexandre Axenfeld, a contemporary of James McNeill Whistler during his time in London. Whistler, a master of the print medium, employs a sparse economy of line to capture the sitter. The composition focuses on the subject's upper body, with the figure positioned against a dark, vertical background that provides a stark contrast to the lighter tones of the clothing and face. Whistler uses drypoint to add texture and depth to the shadows, particularly in the hair and the folds of the garment. The lines are fluid and spontaneous, reflecting the artist's preference for capturing a fleeting impression rather than a rigid, academic likeness. The sitter holds a cigarette, a detail that adds a sense of informality and immediacy to the portrait. The plate is signed with Whistler's characteristic butterfly monogram in the lower left corner, a mark he developed to integrate his signature into the overall design of his works. This print demonstrates Whistler's technical proficiency with the needle. He leaves much of the paper surface untouched, allowing the white space to define the form. This approach creates a sense of air and light around the subject. The work is a fine example of the portraiture produced during the artist's mature period, where he moved away from narrative detail to focus on the arrangement of tone and line. It remains a clear representation of his contribution to the revival of etching in the late nineteenth century.
