A refined Shin-hanga woodblock print by Itō Shinsui, capturing the serene atmosphere of Awazu with its iconic pine trees and distant mountains.
This woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicts the scene at Awazu, a location historically associated with the Eight Views of Lake Biwa. Shinsui, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, revitalised traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques of light and atmosphere while maintaining the collaborative structure of the Edo period. The composition is defined by a series of tall, slender pine trees that punctuate the foreground, their verticality contrasting with the horizontal expanse of the lake and the distant, dark blue mountains.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on a gradient of blues for the mountains and sky, which transitions into a pale, textured green for the foreground. The clouds are rendered with soft, rounded forms, providing a sense of volume against the flat, decorative treatment of the terrain. A small, solitary figure with a pack animal is visible among the trees, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast natural setting. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Shin-hanga style, where the woodblock carving and printing processes are used to achieve subtle tonal variations and atmospheric depth.
Shinsui was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and became known for his ability to capture the mood of a specific time and place. This work reflects the interest in traditional Japanese motifs that defined the early twentieth-century print revival. The clear, graphic quality of the trees and the deliberate arrangement of the elements demonstrate a balance between observation and stylisation. The print remains a representative example of how artists of this period engaged with the classical themes of Japanese art, reinterpreting them through a modern lens.
