John Bauer (1882-1918) was a Swedish painter, illustrator, and printmaker, best known for his illustrations of fairy tales and myths. Bauer's illustrations are characterised by their atmospheric quality, detailed rendering, and evocative use of light and shadow. He tragically died at the age of 36, when the ferry he and his family were travelling on sank. All aboard perished. 'Awake Groa Awake Mother' depicts a scene from Norse mythology.
