A monochromatic illustration by John Bauer, 'Awake Groa Awake Mother' depicts a scene from Norse mythology, showcasing a small figure calling out to the mythical Groa under a night sky.
John Bauer (1882-1918) was a Swedish painter, illustrator, and printmaker, best known for his illustrations of fairy tales and myths. His work often features elements of Nordic folklore and mythology, rendered in a style that blends realism with a touch of the fantastical. Bauer's illustrations are characterised by their atmospheric quality, detailed rendering, and evocative use of light and shadow. He tragically died at the age of 36, when the ferry he and his family were travelling on sank. All aboard perished. 'Awake Groa Awake Mother' depicts a scene from Norse mythology. The illustration shows a small figure standing before a large rock formation, under a night sky with a crescent moon and stars. The figure appears to be calling out, perhaps invoking the mythical figure of Groa. The composition is dominated by the contrast between the small, vulnerable figure and the imposing rock, creating a sense of scale and mystery. The monochromatic palette adds to the ethereal quality of the image, enhancing the sense of a timeless, mythical world.
