A Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a Western man and a Japanese woman, capturing the cultural exchange of the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. These prints documented the arrival of Westerners, capturing the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding the appearance, clothing, and customs of the new visitors.
The composition depicts a Western man in a military-style coat and a Japanese woman within an interior space. The man gestures toward a full moon visible through an open screen, while the woman looks on. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines common to the period. The colour palette relies on traditional woodblock pigments, including indigo, ochre, and muted reds, applied to the figures and the architectural elements of the room.
Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and produced numerous works depicting foreign subjects. His approach to these figures often involved a degree of caricature, as he relied on descriptions and imported illustrations rather than direct observation. The inclusion of the moon and the specific architectural details suggests a setting intended to evoke a sense of place, even if the depiction of the Westerner remains stylised. The print serves as a record of the cultural exchange occurring during the Bakumatsu period, reflecting the fascination with the outside world that defined the era. The work is a representative example of how Japanese artists interpreted the presence of foreigners, blending traditional aesthetic conventions with the novel subject matter of the mid-nineteenth century.
