A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Johann Sadeler I, depicting the allegorical figure of Autumn amidst a busy harvest scene.
This engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the season of autumn through a blend of classical allegory and Northern European rural life. The composition is organised around the figure of Autumn, a bearded man crowned with vine leaves, who sits in the foreground surrounded by the fruits of the harvest. He holds a cornucopia, a traditional symbol of abundance, while baskets and barrels of produce are arranged at his feet.
The background expands into a panoramic view of a sixteenth-century countryside. The scene includes various activities associated with the season: farmers transporting goods in carts, workers tending to the fields, and the preparation of wine. In the sky, the artist has included the zodiac signs corresponding to the autumn months, specifically Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius, which provide a celestial framework for the seasonal cycle.
Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates technical precision in his use of line. The engraving employs varied hatching techniques to create texture and depth, from the soft foliage of the trees to the solid forms of the wooden barrels. The perspective is expansive, drawing the eye from the immediate foreground activity toward the distant horizon where a windmill and village structures are visible.
This work belongs to a series representing the Four Seasons, a popular subject in Northern European printmaking during the late sixteenth century. These prints were often produced after designs by other artists, in this instance Hans Bol, whose name appears in the lower left corner as the inventor of the composition. The Latin inscription at the base provides a poetic summary of the season, linking the harvest to the passage of time and the movement of the stars. The print offers a detailed look at the agricultural practices and the symbolic visual language of the period.
