A traditional Chinese ink and colour painting on silk by Lan Ying, depicting a mountain villa during autumn in the style of Li Cheng.
Lan Ying, a prominent painter of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, produced this work as a tribute to the Northern Song master Li Cheng. The composition adheres to the shan shui tradition, focusing on the relationship between towering rock formations and the quietude of a secluded dwelling. Lan Ying employs a sophisticated brush technique, balancing the monumental scale of the mountains with the delicate rendering of autumn foliage and pine trees.
The painting demonstrates the artist's engagement with historical styles. By referencing Li Cheng, Lan Ying adopts a specific approach to texture strokes and atmospheric depth. The mist, rendered through subtle washes, separates the foreground from the distant peaks, creating a sense of spatial recession. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earth tones and muted reds to convey the seasonal transition. This work reflects the scholarly practice of studying past masters to refine one's own technical proficiency.
In the foreground, the architecture of the villa is integrated into the natural environment, suggesting a harmonious existence between human habitation and the wilderness. The trees, depicted with varied ink densities, provide a rhythmic structure to the lower portion of the scroll. Lan Ying's ability to synthesise these elements into a cohesive image demonstrates his technical command. The work serves as a record of the artist's dialogue with the canon of Chinese painting, prioritising the transmission of traditional methods over innovation. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden tone, which complements the autumnal theme and the ink work. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic values of the seventeenth-century literati, who sought solace in the depiction of remote, mountainous retreats.
