A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Israël Silvestre capturing the stone bridge at Rouen and the surrounding river activity.
This etching by the French artist Israël Silvestre depicts a view of the stone bridge at Rouen, accompanied by the silhouette of Mont Saint-Catherine in the distance. Silvestre, a prolific draughtsman and printmaker, gained recognition for his topographical views of cities and royal residences across France and Italy. His work provides a precise record of seventeenth-century urban architecture and maritime activity.
The composition focuses on the bridge, which spans the river with multiple arches. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the masonry of the bridge and the architectural details of the city skyline. In the foreground, the river is populated with various small boats and figures, adding a sense of daily life to the scene. The sky is rendered with light, horizontal hatching to suggest clouds, maintaining a balance between the architectural elements and the natural environment.
Silvestre was known for his ability to capture the character of a location with clarity and technical precision. His prints were often collected as souvenirs or records of travel, reflecting the interest in geography and urban development during the period. The inclusion of the title and the artist's signature at the bottom of the plate is characteristic of his published series. This print offers a clear view of the bridge's structure, including the section that appears damaged or under repair, which is a common feature in his documentation of historical sites. The work is an example of the meticulous approach to printmaking that defined his career as a draughtsman to the King.
