Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter and printmaker. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon adopted his pseudonym in homage to the poet François Villon. 'Autre Temps' depicts two women in period clothing, seated on a vibrant green lawn. One woman, in a white dress and black hat, sits in the foreground, holding a hoop. Behind her, another woman in a pink dress and black shawl looks off to the side. In the background, figures on horseback and in carriages populate the scene, creating a sense of leisure and activity. The composition is characterised by its use of colour and line, with the figures and background elements rendered in a style that blends elements of Impressionism and early Cubism.
