A detailed botanical study by Marianne North, featuring the striking Australian Spear Lily set against a backdrop of acacia foliage.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who dedicated her life to documenting the flora of the world. Her approach was distinct from the scientific illustrators of her time, as she preferred to paint plants in their natural habitats rather than as isolated specimens against a white background. This work captures the Doryanthes excelsa, commonly known as the Australian Spear Lily, alongside the delicate foliage of an Acacia.
The composition focuses on the contrast between the bold, architectural form of the lily and the fine, feathery texture of the acacia leaves. North used oil paint on board, a medium that allowed her to work quickly while travelling in remote locations. Her brushwork is direct and observational, capturing the specific light and colour of the Australian bush. The deep greens of the background provide a neutral setting that allows the warm, reddish tones of the lily petals to emerge.
North donated her extensive collection of paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they remain housed in a gallery she commissioned herself. This work is representative of her objective to create a visual record of global plant life before the rapid expansion of industrialisation and colonial development altered these environments. Her paintings provide a unique window into the botanical diversity of the nineteenth century, documented with a combination of artistic sensibility and scientific curiosity. This print reproduces the textures of her original oil application, preserving the character of her brushstrokes and the specific colour palette she observed during her time in Australia.
