A masterful engraving by Raphael Morghen after Guido Reni's iconic fresco, depicting Apollo and Aurora in a classical mythological procession.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen reproduces the famous fresco 'Aurora' by Guido Reni, originally painted for the ceiling of the Casino Rospigliosi in Rome. Morghen, a master of the burin, translates the fluid movement and classical composition of the original seventeenth-century work into a monochromatic medium. The print captures Apollo in his chariot, surrounded by the Horae, as they traverse the heavens. Above, a putto carries a torch, while Aurora leads the procession, scattering flowers across the sky.
Morghen employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varying line weights to simulate the tonal range of the original painting. The technique allows for a clear distinction between the figures, the billowing drapery, and the atmospheric clouds. The lower margin includes Latin verses that describe the scene, providing a scholarly context typical of eighteenth-century print culture. This work demonstrates the technical precision that earned Morghen his reputation as one of the finest engravers of his era.
The composition follows the Baroque principles of Reni, yet the clarity of the engraving aligns with the Neoclassical taste for order and anatomical accuracy. The figures are rendered with a focus on classical proportions, reflecting the influence of antique sculpture on the artist. By removing the colour of the original fresco, the print draws attention to the structural integrity of the design and the rhythmic arrangement of the figures. This piece is a fine example of the reproductive print tradition, where the engraver acts as a conduit for the dissemination of major European art. It offers a view into the historical appreciation of Reni's work and the technical capabilities of printmakers working in the late eighteenth century.
