A detailed 17th-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicting the harvest month of August, featuring rural labourers, livestock, and a classical allegorical sun.
This engraving, titled August, is part of a series depicting the months of the year. Aegidius Sadeler II, a master of the burin, produced this work during his time in Prague, where he served as court engraver to Emperor Rudolf II. The composition follows the tradition of the Labours of the Months, a theme common in medieval and Renaissance art, yet it carries the distinct stylistic hallmarks of the late Northern Mannerist period.
The scene presents a busy harvest period. In the foreground, figures rest and dine amidst goats and sheep, while in the middle ground, labourers work the fields. The background reveals a rolling countryside with a church and a distant castle, rendered with the precise, fine-line technique characteristic of Sadeler's output. Above the horizon, a personified figure of the sun occupies the sky, reinforcing the seasonal theme. The Latin inscription at the base provides a classical framing for the agricultural activities depicted, connecting the physical labour of the peasantry to the celestial order.
Sadeler's approach to space is expansive, using atmospheric perspective to draw the eye from the immediate foreground to the distant hills. The density of the hatching creates a sense of texture, from the rough bark of the trees to the soft wool of the livestock. This print demonstrates the technical rigour of the Sadeler family, who were instrumental in disseminating the styles of contemporary painters through high-quality reproductive prints. The work functions as both a record of seasonal life and an exercise in classical allegory, typical of the intellectual climate of the Prague court. Its monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the structural composition and the narrative details of rural existence, capturing a moment of transition in the agricultural calendar.
