A detailed etching by Maxime Lalanne depicting a tranquil scene along the Seine at Neuilly, showcasing his mastery of line and atmospheric tone.
Maxime Lalanne was a master of the etching medium, recognised during the nineteenth century for his technical precision and atmospheric control. This work captures a quiet stretch of the Seine at Neuilly, demonstrating his ability to render light and texture through varied line work. Lalanne often focused on the outskirts of Paris, finding subjects in the riverbanks and suburban architecture that defined the period.
The composition is balanced, with the heavy, dark foliage of the trees on the right providing a visual anchor. This contrasts with the lighter, more open treatment of the river and the distant buildings on the left bank. Lalanne employs a range of hatching techniques to suggest the movement of water and the density of the trees. The small boats moored along the bank add a sense of human presence to the scene, grounding the image in the daily life of the river.
Lalanne was a key figure in the etching revival, a movement that sought to restore the status of printmaking as an original artistic medium rather than a purely reproductive one. His work is characterised by a clean, disciplined approach to the copper plate, avoiding excessive ornamentation in favour of clarity and observation. This print reflects his interest in the subtle shifts of tone achievable through the biting of the plate, creating a sense of depth without relying on heavy shadows. The scene remains a calm, observational record of the French riverside, typical of his output during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
