Description
Asterton Bank centres on a high stone viaduct, whose repeated arches cross a calm river and throw warm reflections between the densely wooded banks.
Large rust-coloured masonry piers rise from the valley, each arch opening onto a slice of distant trees and sky. Railings run along the top of the viaduct, while its shadowed undersides make a dark rhythm over the water. The river catches broken amber reflections beside a pale stony margin.
For people passing through Asterton Bank, this view gives the river corridor a strong architectural presence. The bridge carries the eye across the valley, while the still water and close trees make the scene feel sheltered at ground level beside the water.
