A late sixteenth-century study by Cesare Nebbia, depicting a figure in ascension, rendered in ink and wash on blue paper.
This drawing by Cesare Nebbia captures a moment of spiritual ascension. The central figure, depicted with hands clasped in prayer, rises amidst a formation of clouds. Two smaller figures, likely angels or cherubim, flank the subject, providing a sense of movement and divine support. The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common format for ceiling paintings or decorative panels in ecclesiastical architecture of the late sixteenth century.
Nebbia, a prolific artist from Orvieto, was active in Rome during the Counter-Reformation. His work often reflects the stylistic tendencies of the late Mannerist period, characterised by elongated proportions and a focus on expressive gesture. The use of blue paper as a base allows the artist to employ white heightening effectively, creating a sense of volume and light that defines the drapery of the central figure. The brown ink wash provides depth to the clouds, grounding the ethereal subject matter in a tangible, three-dimensional space.
While the specific identity of the central figure remains open to interpretation, the iconography aligns with traditional depictions of the Assumption of the Virgin or the martyrdom of a saint. The fluid lines and the confident application of wash demonstrate the technical proficiency expected of a draughtsman working in the Roman tradition. This piece offers a glimpse into the preparatory process of a period that prioritised dramatic narrative and theological clarity. The work is a study in balance, where the verticality of the rising figure is tempered by the circular arrangement of the surrounding clouds and attendants. It remains a representative example of the graphic output of the late Italian Renaissance, showing the transition toward the more emotive styles of the subsequent century.
