A dramatic woodblock print by Shunshosai Hokuchō depicting the actor Asao Gakujurō in a tense scene from a Kabuki play.
This woodblock print by Shunshosai Hokuchō captures a dramatic moment from the Kabuki theatre, a popular form of Japanese performance art during the Edo period. The print depicts the actor Asao Gakujurō in the role of the ferryman Sanjūrō. Hokuchō, a member of the Osaka school of printmakers, was known for his focus on the theatricality of the stage, often producing works that documented specific performances and the actors who inhabited these roles.
The composition is defined by the tension between the two figures. The ferryman stands in a dynamic posture, wielding a long oar as a weapon, while his opponent is caught in a low, defensive crouch. The artist uses a stark, dark background to isolate the actors, forcing the viewer to focus on their expressions and the physical exertion of the scene. The use of line is precise, typical of the Kamigata-e style, which often favoured a more realistic portrayal of actors compared to the more stylised works produced in Edo.
Details such as the patterned kimono, the sharp edge of the sword, and the specific facial features of the actor provide a glimpse into the aesthetic conventions of the time. The print serves as a record of a specific production, capturing the costume design and the exaggerated gestures that defined Kabuki acting. The colour palette is restrained, relying on subtle blues, browns, and the natural tone of the paper to create a sense of atmosphere. This work offers an insight into the intersection of popular entertainment and visual art in nineteenth-century Japan, where the fame of actors was frequently immortalised through such prints.
