A dreamlike composition by Marc Chagall, featuring the artist and his bride surrounded by floating motifs, Parisian landmarks, and folkloric symbols in deep blue tones.
Marc Chagall painted Artist and His Bride during his final years, reflecting his lifelong preoccupation with memory, love, and his personal history. The composition is dominated by a deep, atmospheric blue, a colour palette that recurs throughout his career to evoke a dreamlike state. In the foreground, the artist and his bride stand together, their figures rendered with a gentle, ethereal quality. The bride, dressed in white, provides a sharp contrast to the surrounding indigo tones.
Chagall populates the space with his characteristic repertoire of motifs. A violinist floats in the air, a recurring figure that represents the artist himself or his heritage in Vitebsk. To the left, the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower anchors the scene in Paris, the city that became his second home. A large bouquet of flowers hangs suspended in the upper centre, while a goat and a rooster appear in the periphery, symbols drawn from Russian folklore and his own childhood experiences. In the upper left corner, a small figure of an artist at an easel suggests a meta-narrative, showing the painter observing his own creation.
The work rejects traditional perspective in favour of a flattened, poetic space where time and reality overlap. Chagall does not attempt to document a specific event, but rather to capture the emotional resonance of his marriage and his artistic identity. The application of paint is fluid and gestural, creating a sense of movement that permeates the entire canvas. By blending personal iconography with the urban environment of Paris, Chagall constructs a visual autobiography that feels both intimate and universal. This piece captures the essence of his late style, where the boundaries between the physical world and the realm of imagination are entirely dissolved.
