A detailed maritime painting by Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier depicting the arrival of King Charles II in Rotterdam in 1660, capturing the atmosphere of the Dutch Golden Age.
This painting by Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier captures the historical arrival of King Charles II in Rotterdam on 24 May 1660. The monarch was en route to England to reclaim the throne following the period of the Commonwealth. Verschuier, a specialist in maritime subjects, depicts the scene with technical precision, focusing on the complex arrangement of vessels within the harbour. The composition is dominated by the large, ornate state barge carrying the King, surrounded by a variety of smaller craft and larger merchant ships.
The artist employs a low horizon line, which allows for an expansive treatment of the sky. The clouds are rendered with soft, diffused light, typical of the Dutch marine tradition. The water is depicted with rhythmic, short brushstrokes, conveying the movement of the harbour current. In the background, the silhouette of Rotterdam is visible, with the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk providing a recognisable anchor for the urban geography of the period.
Verschuier spent time in Italy, and his work often reflects a synthesis of Dutch realism and the atmospheric qualities found in Mediterranean marine art. The palette is restrained, relying on muted greys, ochres, and browns, punctuated by the bright flags and the gilded details of the royal barge. The painting serves as a record of a specific political event, yet it functions primarily as a study of light, water, and naval architecture. The attention to the rigging of the ships and the varied postures of the figures in the smaller boats demonstrates the artist's command of his subject matter. This work remains a significant example of seventeenth-century Dutch maritime art, documenting the intersection of royal history and the daily life of a bustling port city.
