A fine etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo depicting the mythological encounter between Armida and the sleeping knight Rinaldo.
This etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo depicts a scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem, Gerusalemme Liberata. The narrative focuses on the sorceress Armida, who discovers the sleeping knight Rinaldo. The composition is characteristic of the Venetian Rococo style, employing light, fluid lines to define the figures and the surrounding environment. Domenico Tiepolo, the son of the celebrated Giambattista Tiepolo, often worked from his father's designs, as indicated by the inscription on the plate. The scene captures a moment of quiet tension. Rinaldo rests against a rock, his shield held loosely, while Armida observes him with a mixture of curiosity and intent. A small putto, or cupid, is positioned near them, reinforcing the romantic nature of the encounter. The background features a sparse, sketch-like treatment of trees and distant architecture, which directs the viewer's attention to the central figures. The etching technique allows for a delicate play of light and shadow, creating a sense of atmosphere despite the absence of colour. This work is part of a series of prints that explore themes from Tasso's poem. It demonstrates the technical skill of the younger Tiepolo in translating complex narrative subjects into the medium of printmaking. The figures are rendered with a grace typical of the period, reflecting the theatricality often found in 18th-century Italian art. By focusing on the psychological interaction between the two protagonists, the artist creates a compelling visual interpretation of this classic literary episode. The print serves as an example of the collaborative nature of the Tiepolo studio, where the father's inventions were frequently disseminated through the son's printmaking practice.
