A classical depiction of the Greek musician Arion riding a sea horse, rendered with the precise draughtsmanship and balanced composition typical of William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
This work depicts the Greek poet and musician Arion, who, according to legend, was rescued by dolphins after being thrown overboard by sailors. Bouguereau presents the figure in a highly controlled, classical manner, seated upon a sea horse against a decorative, gold-patterned background. The composition is oval, a format often used by the artist to contain his figures within a balanced, harmonious space.
Bouguereau was a leading figure of the French Academic tradition. His training at the École des Beaux-Arts emphasised precise draughtsmanship, smooth surfaces, and the study of classical antiquity. This painting reflects those values through the anatomical clarity of the figure and the deliberate, staged nature of the scene. The contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the sea horse and the figure's drapery against the metallic gold backdrop creates a distinct visual separation between the subject and the decorative field.
Unlike his later, more sentimental works, this early piece shows a clear interest in the decorative potential of mythological themes. The repetitive pattern of the background serves to flatten the space, drawing focus to the central figure of Arion, who holds his lyre with a calm, composed expression. The work is part of a pair, with its companion piece featuring a Bacchante on a panther, both sharing this unique, stylised approach to mythological narrative. The precision of the brushwork and the clarity of the form are characteristic of Bouguereau's commitment to the standards of the Salon during the mid-nineteenth century.
