Lyubov Popova was a central figure in the Russian Avant-Garde, known for her rigorous approach to non-objective art. This work, from her Architectonics series, demonstrates her transition from Cubo-Futurism toward a more disciplined, structural form of abstraction. Popova rejected the idea of the painting as a window into a representational world, choosing instead to treat the canvas as a space for the arrangement of autonomous forms. The composition relies on the interaction of geometric planes. Large, flat shapes in orange, green, and black overlap and intersect, creating a sense of tension and balance. Unlike the chaotic energy of her earlier Futurist works, this piece exhibits a controlled, architectural logic. The forms do not suggest depth through traditional perspective; rather, they exist as physical entities on the surface of the canvas. The application of paint is deliberate, with matte surfaces that emphasise the weight and presence of each colour block. Popova studied the works of the Italian Futurists and the French Cubists, yet she developed a distinct visual language that prioritised the material reality of the painting.
