This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Rikan II in the role of Kizu Kansuke. Produced by Gigadō Ashiyuki, a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmakers, the work captures the specific stylised aesthetic of the Kamigata region. Unlike the more idealised portraits from Edo, Osaka prints often focused on the individual characteristics of the performers, providing a record of their stage presence and costume.
The actor is shown in a dynamic pose, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The composition is clean, set against a neutral background that draws attention to the pattern of his kimono. The garment features a repeating circular motif intersected by vertical stripes, demonstrating the precision of the woodblock carving process.
