A modernist depiction of the Armenian highlands by Martiros Saryan, featuring the snow-capped peaks of Aragats and Mount Ara.
Martiros Saryan, a central figure in Armenian modernism, produced this depiction of the Armenian highlands in 1959. The composition captures the imposing presence of Mount Aragats and Mount Ara, two iconic peaks that define the geography of the region. Saryan employs a distinct approach to colour, moving away from strict realism to favour a more expressive interpretation of the terrain. The foreground is dominated by large, sun-drenched boulders rendered in warm tones, which contrast with the cooler, atmospheric blues and purples of the distant mountains.
Saryan spent much of his career documenting the Armenian countryside. His technique involves broad, confident brushwork that simplifies the complex topography into planes of colour. The sky remains clear, allowing the light to unify the disparate elements of the scene. The trees in the mid-ground provide a sense of scale, anchoring the viewer before the eye travels toward the snow-capped summits. This work reflects the artist's deep connection to his homeland, a theme that occupied him throughout his long career. By focusing on the interplay between the rugged earth and the expansive sky, Saryan creates a sense of stillness and permanence. The painting avoids unnecessary detail, relying instead on the strength of its palette and the clarity of its forms to convey the character of the Armenian plateau. It is a representative example of his later period, where his style became increasingly synthesised and focused on the essential qualities of the natural world.
