A still life by Félix Vallotton, 'Apples' features a basket of fruit rendered in the artist's signature style of flat planes and simplified forms. The painting exemplifies Vallotton's ability to find beauty in the mundane.
Félix Vallotton, a Swiss and French painter, printmaker, and sculptor, created 'Apples' in 1919. Vallotton was associated with Les Nabis, a Post-Impressionist avant-garde group of French artists who set the pace for fine arts and graphic arts in France in the 1890s. The Nabis sought inspiration from Japanese prints, as well as from Impressionism and other contemporary movements. Vallotton's style is characterised by its flat planes of colour, simplified forms, and a certain detachment from emotional expression. 'Apples' presents a collection of red and green apples arranged in a basket, which is lined with straw and a blue cloth. The composition is simple, with a focus on the shapes and colours of the fruit. A newspaper rests near the base of the basket, adding a touch of everyday life to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, with the reds and greens of the apples contrasting against the neutral background. The painting demonstrates Vallotton's ability to find beauty in ordinary subjects, rendered with a cool, objective eye.
