An exquisite eighteenth-century French etching depicting Apollo in his chariot, framed by the characteristic asymmetrical scrolls and rocaille motifs of the Rococo period.
This etching, published by Gabriel Huquier, captures the essence of the French Rococo style. The composition features the mythological figure of Apollo driving his sun chariot across the heavens, surrounded by clouds and radiant light. The central scene is enclosed within an elaborate cartouche, defined by the asymmetrical curves, C-scrolls, and shell-like motifs characteristic of the rocaille aesthetic.
Gabriel Huquier was a prominent printmaker and art dealer in eighteenth-century Paris. He played a significant role in disseminating the designs of contemporary architects and decorators, such as Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, whose name appears on the plate. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the period, using fine hatching to create depth and texture within the clouds and the muscular forms of the horses. The frame itself acts as a decorative element, showcasing the fluidity and movement that defined interior design and ornamental arts during the reign of Louis XV.
This work reflects the period's fascination with classical mythology integrated into domestic decoration. The interplay between the dynamic, narrative centre and the highly structured, ornamental border creates a balance between figurative art and architectural design. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth century, where the boundary between fine art and functional ornament was frequently blurred. The inclusion of the phrase 'avec privilege du Roi' indicates the official sanctioning of the publication, a common practice for high-quality prints intended for a sophisticated audience of collectors and designers.
