A classical scene depicting the god Apollo playing his lyre, surrounded by a peaceful gathering of wild and domestic animals in a forest setting.
Briton Riviere, a painter known for his technical proficiency in depicting animals, presents a scene of mythological harmony in this work. The composition features the Greek god Apollo seated at the base of a large tree, his lyre held in his arms. He is surrounded by a diverse gathering of creatures, including lions, leopards, goats, and deer, all resting in a state of peaceful coexistence. The scene draws upon the classical tradition of the Orphic or Apollonian power to soothe the wild through music. Riviere employs a muted, earthy palette to render the forest floor and the shadows of the trees. The light focuses on the figure of Apollo and the animals nearest to him, creating a sense of quietude. The artist demonstrates his skill in anatomical observation, particularly in the varied textures of fur and the relaxed postures of the predators and prey alike. The animals do not exhibit their usual instincts, as the presence of the god creates a temporary suspension of natural laws. This painting reflects the Victorian interest in classical subjects combined with a high degree of naturalism. Riviere was a student of animal anatomy, often visiting the London Zoo to sketch from life, which informs the convincing physical presence of the creatures here. The work avoids excessive drama, opting instead for a contemplative atmosphere. The arrangement of the animals creates a circular flow around the central figure, drawing the eye across the canvas to observe the different species. It is a study in balance and the intersection of human myth with the natural world.
