A detailed etching by Anthonie Waterloo depicting the myth of Apollo and Daphne within a dense, atmospheric forest setting.
Anthonie Waterloo was a Dutch painter and etcher known for his focus on wooded scenes. This etching depicts the classical myth of Apollo and Daphne. The figures are small, positioned within a dense forest setting that dominates the composition. Waterloo uses a variety of etching techniques to create texture, particularly in the bark of the trees and the foliage. The light filters through the canopy, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere typical of his work.
Waterloo did not rely on dramatic narrative action. Instead, he placed the mythological figures within a natural environment that feels grounded and observable. The trees are rendered with careful attention to their structure, from the gnarled roots in the foreground to the lighter, more distant woods. The sky is filled with soft, etched clouds, providing a contrast to the heavy, dark masses of the trees. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human narrative with the observation of nature. The etching reflects the seventeenth-century Dutch interest in the natural world, where the environment itself often carries as much weight as the subject matter. The print is signed in the upper left corner, a common practice for Waterloo, who often included his name on his plates.
