A satirical eighteenth-century etching by Matthijs Pool depicting monkeys engaged in the trade of tailoring, a classic example of the singerie genre.
This etching by Matthijs Pool belongs to the genre known as singerie, a decorative style featuring monkeys dressed in human clothing and performing human activities. Popularised in the early eighteenth century, these works often served as satirical commentary on contemporary social behaviours, professions, and the vanity of human pursuits. In this composition, a group of monkeys occupies a tailor shop. One figure sits at a table, meticulously working on a garment, while another stands nearby, seemingly overseeing the process. A third monkey is positioned on the floor, engaged in pressing or cleaning fabric. The scene is rendered with precise line work, characteristic of the period, capturing the domestic interior with shelves of cloth, a fireplace, and a window looking out onto a street. The inclusion of text at the bottom, written in both French and Dutch, provides a narrative frame for the visual humour. The French inscription notes the monkeys mimicking human actions, while the Dutch text describes the busy nature of their tailoring work. Pool, an Amsterdam-based engraver and publisher, demonstrates a high degree of technical control in the cross-hatching and shading, which defines the depth of the room and the textures of the clothing. The work reflects the European fascination with exoticism and the allegorical use of animals to critique human folly. By placing these creatures in a mundane, professional setting, the artist invites the viewer to observe the absurdity of the mimicry. The print remains a curious example of the period's penchant for combining technical precision with whimsical, often moralising, subject matter.
