A striking vision by August Natterer, this work depicts a symbolic, cruciform figure emerging from a cloud-like form, rendered in precise graphite lines.
August Natterer, a German artist who spent much of his adult life in psychiatric institutions, produced a body of work defined by his intense internal visions. His drawings, often created during periods of acute psychological distress, document a complex personal mythology. The Antichrist is one of his most recognisable compositions, featuring a central, cruciform figure emerging from a large, cloud-like head.
The figure is rendered with precise, clean lines, contrasting with the ethereal, soft shading of the background and the lower form. The central entity wears a garment marked by geometric patterns, its arms extended in a gesture that mimics traditional religious iconography. Natterer described his process as the transcription of images he saw before his eyes, which he called 'Witch-Head' visions. These works were not intended as conventional art but as a record of his perceived reality.
This piece demonstrates the clarity and symmetry often found in Natterer's output. The composition is balanced, with the vertical axis of the figure anchoring the more amorphous, dreamlike elements below. The use of graphite allows for subtle gradations in tone, creating a sense of depth despite the flat, symbolic nature of the subject matter. Natterer's work gained attention from psychiatrists and artists alike, including Hans Prinzhorn, who included his drawings in his seminal study of art produced by patients in psychiatric hospitals. This print offers a clear view of the artist's unique visual language, where religious symbolism and personal hallucination merge into a singular, haunting image. It remains a significant example of the intersection between mental experience and creative expression, stripped of academic artifice.
