A striking abstract lithograph by Martin Kline, featuring two dense, gestural forms created through rhythmic, repetitive mark-making.
Martin Kline, born in 1961, is an American artist known for his engagement with material processes and the physical application of medium. This work, titled Annunciation, demonstrates his interest in the tactile nature of mark-making. The composition features two distinct, dense forms that occupy the pictorial space, created through repetitive, rhythmic strokes of dark pigment against a neutral background.
The imagery suggests a dialogue between two entities, echoing the traditional iconographic theme of the Annunciation through a purely abstract lens. Rather than depicting figures, Kline uses the accumulation of lines to build volume and texture. The strokes radiate from central points, creating a sense of energy and movement within each form. The contrast between the heavy, dark application of the medium and the stark white paper creates a visual tension that defines the work.
Kline often employs techniques that allow the physical properties of his materials to dictate the final appearance of the piece. In this print, the layering of marks creates a surface that appears almost sculptural. The repetition of the stroke pattern provides a sense of order, yet the individual lines retain a raw, gestural quality. This approach reflects a broader interest in the history of painting, where the act of applying pigment is as significant as the resulting image. By stripping away representational elements, the artist invites the viewer to focus on the interplay of light, shadow, and form. The work functions as a study in balance, with the two forms mirroring each other across the centre of the composition, creating a sense of symmetry that is disrupted by the unique, organic quality of the individual marks.
