A detailed Renaissance panel painting by Defendente Ferrari, depicting the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne within a grand architectural interior.
This work by Defendente Ferrari, a painter active in the Piedmont region of Italy during the early sixteenth century, depicts the subject known as the Anna te Drieën, or the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne. The composition presents the Virgin Mary and her mother, Saint Anne, seated together, with the Christ Child positioned between them. The figures are rendered with the precise, linear quality characteristic of Ferrari's style, which often incorporates Northern European influences alongside Italian traditions.
The setting is a complex architectural interior, featuring a vaulted space that recedes into the background. Ferrari employs a rigorous perspective to frame the figures, creating a sense of depth that contrasts with the detailed, almost decorative treatment of the drapery and the figures' features. Two small angels are positioned behind the women, one playing a flute and the other a stringed instrument, adding a musical element to the devotional scene. The use of light is controlled, illuminating the faces of the figures while casting soft shadows within the folds of their garments.
Ferrari's work is recognised for its meticulous attention to detail, from the textures of the clothing to the architectural elements of the background. The painting reflects the artistic climate of the period, where religious iconography was frequently adapted to include contemporary architectural motifs and refined, expressive portraiture. The panel remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance narrative clarity with a highly finished, polished surface. The colour palette is dominated by deep blues and greens, which provide a stable foundation for the lighter, warmer tones of the skin and the golden halos. This piece offers a view into the devotional art of the Piedmontese Renaissance, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation within a grand, structured environment.
