A detailed photographic study of a 19th-century Indian gold anklet, featuring dense beadwork and traditional craftsmanship.
This piece represents a traditional Indian anklet, known as a paizeb. Crafted from gold, the object displays the technical skill of 19th-century South Asian goldsmiths. The design features a circular band adorned with numerous small, spherical beads that create a dense, textured surface. Interspersed among these beads are small, triangular or conical elements that provide structural rhythm to the piece.
In Indian culture, the paizeb is a significant item of personal adornment. These items were often designed to produce a soft, melodic sound when the wearer moved, a quality achieved through the arrangement of the small, loose beads. The construction demonstrates a high level of precision, with each component linked to form a cohesive, circular frame. The gold surface retains a warm, metallic lustre, reflecting the light across its varied, rounded forms.
Such jewellery served both aesthetic and social functions, often forming part of a bridal trousseau or daily attire. The weight and density of the gold suggest it was intended for formal occasions. The preservation of this specific anklet allows for a close examination of the metalwork techniques employed during this period, including granulation and wire-work. The piece is presented here as a fine art print, capturing the physical presence and material quality of the original object. It offers a view into the historical craft traditions of the Indian subcontinent, where jewellery design was a highly developed art form. The focus on repetition and geometric arrangement within the beadwork provides a visual balance, making it a compelling subject for study or display.
