A detailed engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicting an angel with the instruments of the Passion, including the lance, sponge, and dice.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicts an angel holding the instruments of the Passion of Christ. The figure stands behind a stone ledge, clutching a long lance topped with a sponge. Before her, three dice rest upon a cloth, referencing the soldiers who cast lots for Christ's garments. The composition is characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style, which Sadeler refined during his time in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II.
Sadeler employs precise, controlled hatching to define the textures of the angel's drapery, the metallic sheen of the lance, and the soft curls of the hair. The background features heavy, draped fabric that adds a sense of theatricality to the scene. The Latin inscription at the base provides a theological context for the objects displayed, linking the physical items to the narrative of the Crucifixion. The angel's expression is calm, contrasting with the gravity of the objects she holds.
As a master engraver, Sadeler was known for his technical skill and his ability to translate complex painterly compositions into the medium of print. This work demonstrates his command of light and shadow, using the contrast between the dark background and the illuminated figure to create a sense of volume. The print is a fine example of the devotional imagery produced in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, intended for contemplation and study. The attention to detail, from the individual pips on the dice to the folds in the fabric, reflects the high standards of the Prague printmaking school. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of religious iconography and the technical virtuosity of the period.
