An engraving by William Blake from his Illustrations of the Book of Job, 'And smote Job with sore Boils' depicts the biblical figure afflicted with illness, testing his faith.
William Blake (1757-1827) was a British poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry and unique illuminated prints display a visionary imagination, often incorporating mystical and religious symbolism. Blake trained as an engraver, which influenced his artistic style, characterised by strong lines and symbolic imagery. 'And smote Job with sore Boils' is an engraving from Blake's series of illustrations for the Book of Job, completed in 1825. The image depicts Job afflicted with boils, a test of his faith imposed by Satan with God's permission. Job lies prostrate, covered in sores, while a figure stands over him, seemingly casting a shroud. A grieving woman kneels nearby. The composition is framed by text from the Book of Job and decorative elements, including bats and spiders, adding to the scene's symbolic weight. Blake's detailed engraving technique and dramatic composition convey the suffering and spiritual struggle at the heart of the biblical narrative.
