Joseph-Marie Vien, a central figure in the transition from the Rococo to the Neoclassical style in France, produced this study of a sleeping anchorite during the mid-eighteenth century. The work depicts a hermit in a state of repose, surrounded by traditional memento mori symbols: an open book and a human skull. These elements serve as reminders of the transience of life and the contemplative nature of the ascetic existence.
