A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting an American visitor on horseback during the opening of Japan to the West.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan ended its policy of national isolation, artists produced these images to satisfy public curiosity regarding the appearance and customs of foreigners arriving in the port of Yokohama. The print depicts an American man mounted on a horse, rendered with the characteristic stylistic conventions of the period.
The figure wears a Western-style coat, trousers, and a hat, while smoking a cigar. The horse is depicted in a stylised manner, with a deep reddish-brown coat and blue-tinted hooves. A pink scroll in the upper left corner contains Japanese text identifying the subject as an American. The composition is flat, typical of the ukiyo-e tradition, with the subject isolated against a plain, light-coloured background. The artist employs clear, defined outlines and a limited colour palette to convey the exotic nature of the visitor.
Utagawa Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became a prolific designer of these prints. His work often focused on the arrival of Westerners, including diplomats, merchants, and soldiers. These prints functioned as a form of visual news, allowing the Japanese public to familiarise themselves with the dress and equipment of people from the United States, Britain, and other nations. The print provides a historical record of the cultural exchange occurring at the time, capturing the fascination with the unfamiliar technology and fashion introduced by foreign visitors. The work is a representative example of how traditional Japanese printmaking techniques adapted to document the rapid modernisation and opening of the country during the mid-nineteenth century.
