A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting a social encounter between an American visitor and a Japanese woman in the 1860s.
This woodblock print, titled An American Carousing, belongs to the genre of Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period following the opening of Japanese ports to foreign trade. Utagawa Yoshitora, a pupil of the master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced this work around 1861 to satisfy public curiosity regarding the appearance and habits of Westerners arriving in Japan.
The composition depicts an American man in Western attire, including a hat and dark jacket, standing beside a Japanese woman dressed in a patterned kimono. The man holds a glass and a bottle, suggesting a scene of social indulgence. The woman, wearing high wooden geta sandals, appears to be accompanying him. The artist uses a flat, graphic approach to represent the figures, typical of the Utagawa school, while the yellow background provides a neutral space that emphasises the contrast between the two subjects.
Such prints functioned as visual news reports for a populace largely unfamiliar with foreign customs. The inclusion of Japanese text within a decorative cartouche identifies the subject matter for the viewer. The work demonstrates the cultural exchange occurring at the time, as Japanese artists attempted to interpret and document the arrival of foreigners. The print captures a specific moment of social interaction, reflecting the curiosity and occasional bewilderment that characterised the early years of the Meiji Restoration era. The lines are clear and defined, characteristic of the woodblock printing process, and the colour palette remains relatively restrained, focusing on the patterns of the woman's kimono and the solid blocks of colour defining the man's clothing.
