A striking woodcut print by William Nicholson from his 1898 series, An Almanac of Twelve Sports, depicting a boxing match with bold silhouettes and minimal colour.

This woodcut print is a plate from the 1898 publication, An Almanac of Twelve Sports, which featured verses by Rudyard Kipling alongside illustrations by William Nicholson. Nicholson, working alongside James Pryde under the pseudonym the Beggarstaff Brothers, developed a distinct visual language characterised by bold silhouettes and a restricted colour palette. This approach drew inspiration from the flat planes of Japanese woodblock prints and the graphic economy of poster design. The image depicts two boxers in the ring, captured in a moment of physical engagement. Nicholson employs a limited range of tones, using black ink to define the figures and the surrounding structure, while a muted ochre provides the background. The composition is stark and direct, focusing on the tension between the two athletes. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs the viewer to the essential geometry of the sport. The heavy outlines and solid blocks of colour create a sense of weight and movement, typical of Nicholson's graphic work during this period. Nicholson's contribution to the Almanac series remains a notable example of late nineteenth-century British graphic art. His ability to convey narrative and character through minimal means allowed him to produce images that are both immediate and enduring. This print reflects the transition from Victorian illustrative traditions toward a more modern, simplified aesthetic. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the texture and tonal qualities of the original woodcut process. It offers a glimpse into the intersection of literature and visual art at the turn of the century, where the printed page became a site for artistic experimentation.
