Joseph Wright of Derby, born in 1734, was an English painter known for his use of dramatic lighting effects, particularly in his candlelit scenes. He captured the spirit of the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. Wright's innovative approach to light and shadow earned him recognition during his lifetime and continues to captivate audiences today. He died in 1797. 'An Academy by Lamplight' depicts a life drawing class illuminated by a single lamp. The scene is set within a dimly lit room, where a group of male students are gathered around a nude female model. The lamp serves as the primary light source, casting strong shadows and creating a sense of drama and intrigue. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, their expressions and gestures conveying a sense of concentration and engagement.
