A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Domenico Cunego depicting the Roman ruins of the amphitheatre in Benevento, Italy.
This etching by Domenico Cunego presents a detailed view of the Roman amphitheatre in Benevento, Italy. Cunego, a skilled printmaker from Verona, was active during the eighteenth century and frequently collaborated with architects and antiquarians to document the classical ruins of the Italian peninsula. His work reflects the period interest in archaeology and the preservation of historical sites through the medium of print.
The composition balances the monumental scale of the ancient stone arches with the daily activities of the local population. The crumbling masonry, overgrown with vegetation, provides a sense of the passage of time. In the foreground, figures are depicted engaged in rural tasks, such as tending to livestock and carrying bundles, which adds a human dimension to the architectural subject. The use of fine cross-hatching and varied line weights allows Cunego to define the textures of the weathered stone, the soft foliage, and the atmospheric quality of the sky.
Cunego was known for his technical precision, often working in Rome where he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca. His prints were widely collected by travellers on the Grand Tour, who sought souvenirs of the classical sites they visited. This specific print captures the intersection of Roman engineering and the rural life of the Kingdom of Naples, providing a record of the site as it appeared in the late eighteenth century. The bilingual caption at the base, in English and French, suggests the print was intended for an international audience of scholars and collectors. The work remains a fine example of the veduta tradition, which prioritised topographical accuracy alongside a romanticised appreciation for the remnants of antiquity.
