A detailed 1589 engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicting Amerigo Vespucci at sea, surrounded by allegorical figures and maritime motifs.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicts the explorer Amerigo Vespucci standing upon the deck of a ship. The composition is part of a series illustrating the discovery of the Americas. Collaert, a member of a prominent family of printmakers in Antwerp, utilised the technical precision characteristic of the period to render the scene. The image blends historical narrative with mythological elements, a common practice in late sixteenth-century European art.
Vespucci occupies the centre of the frame, dressed in contemporary attire. Surrounding the vessel are various figures that represent the exotic nature of the New World as perceived by Europeans at the time. These include sea creatures, figures with classical attributes, and a personification of the continent. The background features a rising sun over a distant coastline, suggesting the dawn of a new era of exploration. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides context regarding the naming of the continent after the Florentine navigator.
The engraving demonstrates the technical skill of the Flemish school, with fine lines used to create texture in the water, the ship's rigging, and the figures. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe both the deck of the ship and the surrounding sea. This work reflects the European fascination with geography and the expansion of maritime knowledge during the late Renaissance. It serves as a visual record of how the discovery of the Americas was interpreted and mythologised through the medium of print, which allowed such imagery to circulate widely across the continent.
