A mid-nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock print depicting an American horseman, created during the opening of Yokohama port to foreign trade.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the Bakumatsu period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the arrival of foreigners, their customs, and their technology. This specific work depicts an American man on horseback, a subject that fascinated the Japanese public at the time.
The composition is characteristic of Yoshitora, who was a prolific designer of these prints. The figure is rendered with a degree of caricature, reflecting the artist's attempt to interpret Western features and attire through a traditional Japanese aesthetic lens. The horseman wears a top hat and a dark coat, holding a cigar, which were markers of Western identity in the eyes of the Japanese observers. The horse itself is depicted with stylised musculature and a flowing mane, consistent with the artistic conventions of the Utagawa school.
To the left, a scroll-like cartouche contains the title and descriptive text in Japanese, identifying the subject as American. The use of flat colour planes and bold outlines is typical of the woodblock medium. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the horse and the background, contrasted by the dark clothing of the rider. This print serves as a historical document of the cultural exchange occurring in the port city of Yokohama during the mid-nineteenth century. It captures a moment of curiosity and observation, where the unfamiliar was translated into the visual language of the floating world.
