A 1861 woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting an American couple, created during the early years of Japanese-Western trade in Yokohama.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, produced in 1861, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints emerged during the late Edo period, following the opening of Japanese ports to foreign trade. Artists of this time documented the appearance, customs, and technology of the Westerners who arrived in Yokohama. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was a prolific designer of these images.
The print depicts an American couple, rendered through the lens of Japanese observation. The male figure wears a dark frock coat with a feathered hat, while the female figure is dressed in a voluminous crinoline skirt and a bonnet adorned with floral details. The artist employs a flat, graphic approach to the figures, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, while attempting to capture the specific silhouettes of mid-nineteenth-century Western fashion. The background is a solid, warm ochre, which draws attention to the figures and the accompanying text block at the top of the composition.
This work provides insight into the Japanese perception of foreigners during a period of rapid cultural transition. The text included in the scroll-like cartouche offers a contemporary explanation of the subjects, reflecting the curiosity and analytical gaze of the Japanese public at the time. The print is a clear example of how traditional woodblock techniques were adapted to record the arrival of global visitors. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the dark attire of the man and the teal skirt of the woman, set against the neutral ground. As a historical document, it captures a specific moment of cross-cultural encounter, preserved through the medium of the colour woodblock print.
