A detailed botanical engraving of carnivorous bog plants, originally published in Robert John Thornton's 'The Temple of Flora' in 1812.
This botanical study originates from the ambitious publication 'The Temple of Flora', a project conceived by the physician and botanist Robert John Thornton. Published in the early nineteenth century, the work sought to document rare and exotic plants through large-scale, dramatic compositions. Thomas Sutherland, a skilled engraver, executed the plate using a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving techniques, which allowed for the subtle tonal gradations and textural detail seen in the foliage. The composition depicts several carnivorous species, including the pitcher plant and the Venus flytrap, set against a moody, atmospheric backdrop of a marshy environment. Unlike traditional botanical plates that isolate specimens against a plain white background, this work places the plants within their natural habitat. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep greens, earthy browns, and soft greys, reflects the damp, overcast conditions of a bog. The artist employs precise line work to define the unique structures of the carnivorous leaves, capturing both their functional anatomy and their aesthetic form. Robert John Thornton commissioned various artists and engravers to contribute to this series, aiming to combine scientific accuracy with the romantic sensibilities of the period. The resulting prints are noted for their scale and their departure from the rigid conventions of contemporary scientific illustration. This specific plate provides a clear view of the specialised adaptations of bog-dwelling flora, rendered with the technical proficiency expected of a master engraver of the era. The print remains a significant example of British botanical art, documenting the fascination with global biodiversity that characterised the early nineteenth century.
