Francis Seymour Haden was a central figure in the nineteenth-century Etching Revival, a movement that sought to restore the status of etching as an original artistic medium rather than a mere reproductive tool. This work, Amalfi, captures the dense, vertical architecture of the Italian coastal town. Haden employs a spontaneous, sketch-like approach, prioritising the immediacy of the line over rigid topographical accuracy.

The composition is defined by a series of dramatic arches that draw the eye into the shadowed recesses of the street. Haden uses the biting of the plate to create varying depths of tone, from the delicate, thin lines defining the distant masonry to the heavy, dark ink application that grounds the foreground.
