A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the classical myth of the river god Alphëus and the nymph Arethusa by Dutch master Abraham Bloteling.
This print depicts the classical myth of the river god Alphëus and the nymph Arethusa. According to Ovid, Arethusa was a huntress who, while bathing in a stream, was pursued by the river god Alphëus. In this composition, Bloteling captures the moment of their encounter. Arethusa is positioned on the bank, her form rendered with the precise anatomical modelling characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Alphëus emerges from the water, his gaze fixed upon her, his head adorned with aquatic foliage.
Bloteling was a master of the mezzotint and etching techniques, and this work demonstrates his technical control over line and tone. The foliage is rendered with fine, rhythmic hatching, creating a sense of density in the wooded background. The contrast between the smooth skin of the figures and the textured bark of the trees provides a clear visual hierarchy. The composition follows the conventions of the period, using the figures to guide the viewer through the narrative space.
As a Dutch printmaker who spent time in England, Bloteling influenced the development of tonal printmaking. This particular work reflects the interest in classical themes that permeated European art during the late seventeenth century. The print is a fine example of the period's ability to translate complex mythological narratives into accessible, highly detailed graphic works. The balance between the human figures and the natural setting creates a sense of stillness, despite the underlying tension of the mythological pursuit. The work remains a representative example of the technical proficiency found in the Dutch print tradition, where the artist's hand is visible in every cross-hatched shadow and delicate contour.
