A detailed woodcut by Peter Flötner depicting an allegorical battle between personified vices and virtues, reflecting the social tensions of the German Renaissance.
This woodcut by Peter Flötner presents a complex moral narrative typical of the German Renaissance. The composition is divided into two opposing forces. On the left, figures representing negative societal traits, such as Tyranny and Usury, are depicted in a chaotic, aggressive manner. They are mounted and armed, moving towards the right side of the frame. The figures on the right, representing virtues like Reason, Justice, and the Word of God, stand their ground against this advance.
Flötner utilises a clear, linear style to delineate the figures and their symbolic attributes. Justice is shown seated within stocks, holding a sword and scales, while the Word of God is personified as an angelic figure carrying a book. The labels inscribed above the figures assist the viewer in identifying the specific vices and virtues being portrayed. This work reflects the social and religious tensions of the early sixteenth century in Germany, where the Reformation and economic shifts prompted artists to create didactic imagery for a broad audience.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of Flötner, who was active in Nuremberg as a sculptor, goldsmith, and designer of woodcuts. His ability to translate abstract concepts into tangible, humanised forms is evident here. The stark contrast between the dark, aggressive forms on the left and the more composed, upright figures on the right creates a visual tension that mirrors the thematic conflict. The work remains a significant example of how printmaking functioned as a medium for social commentary and moral instruction during the period, providing a window into the intellectual climate of the time.
